Cairo: Egypt and Syria engaged in high-level discussions focusing on bilateral relations, regional developments, and the situation in Syria, particularly addressing Israeli violations of Syrian sovereignty, during ministerial talks held on Sunday.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem hosted Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Minister of Economy and Industry Nidal al-Shaar in Cairo. Abdelatty voiced Egypt's firm opposition to Israel's actions against Syrian sovereignty, emphasizing Cairo's condemnation of such activities. He criticized attempts by Israeli forces to exploit the Syrian situation to occupy more territory and destabilize the region.
Abdelatty called for Israel to comply with the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, reaffirming Egypt's consistent stance in support of ending Israel's occupation of the Syrian Golan. Egypt reiterated its support for the legitimate aspirations of all Syrian people components, emphasizing full respect for Syria's sovereignty, unity, stability, and territorial integrity.
Abdelatty further emphasized the importance of maintaining Syrian state institutions and rejecting foreign interference in its internal affairs to align with the Syrian people's aspirations for comprehensive internal stability. He stressed the necessity for coordinated efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, address the issue of foreign fighters, and ensure that Syria becomes a source of stability.
On the topic of Egypt-Syria relations, Abdelatty highlighted the deep historical, popular, and cultural ties between the two nations, noting that this shared legacy reflects a longstanding alignment between the peoples. He stated that Egypt's position on the Syrian crisis has consistently been grounded in principles aimed at restoring security and stability, preserving Syria's unity, and safeguarding its national cohesion.
The talks also covered rapidly evolving regional developments, including negotiations between the United States and Iran and efforts to de-escalate tensions. The ministers shared perspectives on developments in Lebanon.
