Cairo: Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Hussein Eissa met with Transport Minister Kamel El Wazir to review progress on Egypt’s high-speed electric rail network. Eissa emphasized that the project is a key national initiative with significant economic, social, and investment implications. He stated that it aims to enhance connectivity between governorates and foster development across various sectors.
According to State Information Service Egypt, El Wazir highlighted that the network will establish links between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, facilitate trade, and connect industrial zones and agricultural regions to export ports. It will also serve tourist destinations and integrate seamlessly with existing ports, airports, and road networks.
The minister noted that the project is poised to support urban development by creating new growth areas and optimizing population distribution, while also contributing to reduced emissions compared to traditional transport options. The network is expected to span approximately 2,000 km, featuring around 60 stations, and is anticipated to serve up to 2.5 million passengers daily. It will also transport about 15 million tons of goods annually once it becomes fully operational.
