Nairobi: Egypt's environment minister has announced plans for a comprehensive redevelopment of the Blue Hole diving site in South Sinai to harmonize tourism growth with environmental preservation.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Minister of Local Development Manal Awad emphasized the need for an integrated plan during her visit on Sunday, April 26, 2026. The Blue Hole, situated within Abu Galum Nature Reserve near Dahab, is renowned for its underwater sinkhole and diverse marine life. Awad underscored the importance of upgrading visitor services while preserving the fragile coral reef ecosystem.
The minister outlined the redevelopment plan, which includes creating a unified visual identity that reflects the site's environmental and tourism significance. Additionally, she emphasized the need for stricter regulation of tourism activities, such as controlling vehicle access and managing visitor numbers to protect the area.
Awad stressed that coral reefs are a national treasure and should be safeguarded for current and future generations. She instructed officials to issue identification cards to residents who will serve as environmental monitors, tasked with protecting the reserve and educating visitors.
Furthermore, Awad proposed the implementation of electronic payment systems for entrance fees to enhance transparency and improve services. During her visit, she engaged with local business owners, caf© operators, and environmental groups to discuss the planned upgrades.
