Egypt Makes Significant Progress in Labor Law Reform

Geneva: Minister of Labor, Hassan Raddad, met with Director of the International Labour Standards Department at the International Labour Organization (ILO), Corinne Varga, at the organization's headquarters on Friday. The meeting was attended by several ILO officials and a delegation from Egypt's Ministry of Labor.According to State Information Service Egypt, the minister emphasized the political leadership's commitment to implementing international labor standards. This includes developing labor legislation, fostering social dialogue, and strengthening trade union freedoms to achieve a balance among production process parties while ensuring a decent work environment for investment.Raddad highlighted Egypt's consultative approach to labor issues through the Supreme Council for Social Consultation. The council, comprising government, employers, and workers' representatives, discusses labor-related legislation to reach consensus that considers all parties' interests.The minister reviewed the new Labor Law as a testament to Egypt's commitment to international standards. He underscored provisions safeguarding workers' and employers' rights, aligning with evolving labor market trends, including digital platforms and remote work.Raddad also detailed efforts to support trade union freedom, noting the state's respect for trade unions' independence. He mentioned the activation of the Trade Union Complaints Committee to address complaints and requests in line with the law and international standards.The minister affirmed that labor-related legislation is consulted with social partners before enactment, enhancing participation and promoting labor relations stability. He also reviewed national efforts to combat child labor, highlighting a national plan in cooperation with social partners and the ILO, along with protections in the new Labor Law for children.Corinne Varga commended Egypt's progress in labor-related issues, particularly freedom of association, social dialogue, and labor law reform. She emphasized the ILO's appreciation for Egypt's efforts to promote decent work principles and international standards.Varga affirmed the ILO's readiness to continue providing technical support and cooperation to Egypt's Ministry of Labor, aiding labor market development and strengthening national institutions' capacities. Both sides agreed on the importance of continued cooperation in labor law development, compliance with international standards, and adapting to rapid changes in the work world.
