Cairo: Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat on Monday held a meeting with a delegation from China's SANY Group to discuss the execution of renewable energy projects with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW). The plans include establishing a factory to localize wind turbine manufacturing and implementing wind energy projects that rely on local industry.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the discussions also focused on the requirements for the next phase of renewable energy projects using locally-manufactured components. This initiative aligns with the State's strategy to localize industry and transfer technology, which is expected to accelerate timelines for incorporating new solar and wind capacities. The strategic aim is to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and increase the share of renewable and clean energy in the national energy mix to 45 percent by 2028.
The meeting further explored plans to support and upgrade the national electricity grid to better accommodate renewable energy sources. Minister Esmat emphasized the State's efforts to promote industrial localization and modern technology transfer, aiming to alleviate pressure on foreign currency. He underscored the importance of localizing industries related to renewable energy equipment within Egypt's energy transition vision and national energy strategy.
Esmat highlighted ongoing cooperation and partnerships with the private sector in solar and wind projects. He noted that the electricity sector is working towards manufacturing renewable energy equipment locally to satisfy domestic demand and facilitate export to neighboring countries. The minister reaffirmed the State's commitment to providing necessary support, outlining measures to increase the local component in renewable energy projects and presenting investment opportunities available under the national energy strategy.
