New york: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met on Monday, September 22, 2025, with representatives of the member states of the Borrowing Countries Platform, during a session organized by Egypt and Zambia on the sidelines of the High-Level Segment of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting focused on progressing the launch of the Borrowing Countries Platform, an initiative rooted in the 'Sevilla Commitment' from the Fourth United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) held in Sevilla in 2025. The Platform's mission is to foster dialogue, share perspectives, and unify the positions of developing countries regarding sovereign debt issues.
Minister Abdelatty emphasized the necessity for developing countries to reform the global financial architecture to ensure their representation in global economic governance. This call comes in response to escalating challenges such as climate change and the rising levels of sovereign debt. He pointed out that increasing debt burdens, high borrowing costs, and rising debt service obligations are significant hurdles for these countries in achieving sustainable development.
Furthermore, Minister Abdelatty underscored the Platform's critical role in promoting the interests of developing countries in debt-related discussions across international forums. He highlighted the potential for intergovernmental negotiation processes on debt and stressed the urgency for collective actions to restructure international debt, enhance debt sustainability for developing countries, and prevent a global debt crisis.
