Egypt’s National Council for Human Rights Holds Inaugural Meeting After Reconstitution

Cairo: Egypt’s National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) held its first meeting following its recent reconstitution, marking the beginning of a new institutional phase aimed at enhancing its performance and strengthening its role as an independent national mechanism for the protection and promotion of human rights.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting was chaired by NCHR President Ahmed Ehab Gamal El-Din and attended by Vice President Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat, along with council members. Gamal El-Din emphasized that the coming phase requires a clear strategic vision that builds on the council’s institutional legacy while introducing qualitative improvements to its working mechanisms.

These efforts aim to enhance the council’s effectiveness and responsiveness to current human rights challenges, in line with citizens’ aspirations to fully enjoy their fundamental rights and freedoms. He added that the council will work to consolidate its role as a national platform for dialogue and consultation, serving as an institutional bridge between the state and civil society.

This approach is based on respect for pluralism and openness, and seeks to support the rule of law while promoting transparency and accountability. The NCHR head also reaffirmed the council’s commitment to relevant international standards and its openness to best practices and the exchange of expertise with various partners.

During the meeting, council members discussed proposals to develop working mechanisms, including improving reporting processes, strengthening the complaints system, expanding field monitoring activities, and activating the council’s role in reviewing draft legislation and offering recommendations on public policies related to human rights. These efforts aim to align such policies with Egypt’s constitution and its international obligations.

The council further affirmed its intention to enhance its presence and impact at the national level, while actively engaging at the regional and international levels to bolster Egypt’s standing in the field of human rights.
