Cairo: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam underscored the critical role of satellite imagery in the continuous monitoring of Egypt's water resources system. During a meeting with the Egyptian Space Agency, he noted the necessity of leveraging satellite images for their extensive temporal and spatial coverage.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the Minister commended the Egyptian Space Agency's efforts and pointed out how modern technology could address the ministry's human labor shortages. The use of satellite imagery, he explained, is a fundamental component of the second-generation Egyptian irrigation system, known as Irrigation 2.0.
The meeting, which took place on Thursday, included discussions between Sewilam and the CEO of the Egyptian Space Agency, Magid Ismail, and his team. The agenda focused on areas of joint cooperation, with the Space Agency presenting its work, capabilities, and applications pertinent to water resources management.
Sewilam also emphasized the creation of maps to depict water consumption across various crops, facilitating the ministry's ability to allocate water resources efficiently. These measures are expected to support optimal water resource management across cultivated areas in Egypt.
