Cairo: Coastal protection projects represent one of the Egyptian state's top strategic priorities amid the growing challenges posed by climate change to Egypt's coasts, including accelerated coastal erosion, official spokesman of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Ghanem affirmed on Thursday, 14 May 2026.According to State Information Service Egypt, in a phone-in with the news channel Extra News, Ghanem said that the ministry continues its efforts in cooperation with all state bodies to protect Egypt's coasts from climate change impacts and erosion along the Mediterranean shoreline through the implementation of various protection works in several governorates nationwide. He explained that these efforts target the coastal zone stretching 1,200 kilometers along the Mediterranean Sea, to manage the entire coastal area rather than just addressing the beachfront and dealing with it as an integrated system through the implementation of numerous development projects in the urban, agricultural, and industrial sectors.
