New york: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, on the sidelines of the High-Level Segment of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between Egypt and the African Union Commission and discussing continental issues of common interest. Dr. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of developing African visions and comprehensive approaches to strengthen the continent's capacity for integration and unification. He reiterated Egypt's commitment to addressing the complex challenges facing Africa, particularly in peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and sustainable development, while acknowledging the African Union Commission's role in promoting peace, security, and stability.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the discussion also touched upon water security, where Dr. Abdelatty highlighted the need for cooperation based on international law to serve the interests of all Nile Basin countries. He reaffirmed Egypt's rejection of unilateral actions that violate international law in the Eastern Nile Basin and emphasized that Egypt would take necessary steps, in accordance with international law, to protect its water security, as the Nile waters are vital for Egypt's existence.
The meeting also involved exchanging views on the latest political and security developments in Sudan, as well as situations in Libya, South Sudan, and the Horn of Africa, particularly Somalia. An agreement was reached on the importance of mobilizing funding for the new African Union mission in Somalia. Dr. Abdelatty expressed Egypt's unwavering support for Somalia in its efforts to achieve stability, combat terrorism, and maintain its unity and territorial integrity.
