Maya Morsy Launches Initiatives to Empower Disabled Individuals

Doha: Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsy has emphasized a global shift in the approach to empowering individuals with special needs, moving from assistance and protection to capacity-building, opportunity creation, and inclusion. She stated that the focus is now on enabling persons with disabilities to actively participate in society.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Morsy's remarks were made during the inauguration of the Third edition of the Living Independently Initiative for Persons with Disabilities and the Arab Exhibition for Productive Families. This event, organized by the Arab League alongside the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, gathered several Arab ministers of social affairs.

Morsy highlighted that under President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's leadership, Egypt prioritizes the integration of persons with disabilities, especially in economic activities. She referred to Law No. 10 of 2018 as a comprehensive framework for transforming rights into sustainable actions.

Through the Ministry of Social Solidarity and its partners, the provisions of the law have been translated into tangible outcomes. Over 1.3 million Integrated Services Cards have been issued, allowing individuals with special needs to access various services through 222 rehabilitation offices across the country.

The minister also mentioned the "We Will Reach You" campaign, which provides services to vulnerable groups in rural and remote areas, involving over 5,000 trained volunteers. Additionally, progress in inclusive education was noted, with 220 nurseries offering early learning for children with disabilities.

Morsy stated that Egypt's strategy focuses on economic empowerment through innovation and entrepreneurship. The Ministry of Social Solidarity has launched initiatives to assist disabled individuals in establishing small businesses with the help of training, microfinance, and technical and marketing support, in collaboration with the private sector and civil society organizations.
