Egypt’s Mufti Criticizes World Peace Day’s Significance Amidst Palestinian Struggle

Cairo: Egypt's Mufti and head of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, Nazir Mohamed Ayad, declared that peace is a supreme value and a fundamental human goal upheld by all divine religions, particularly Islam. He emphasized that peace is essential for preserving life, human dignity, and building just and cooperative societies.

According to State Information Service Egypt, in a statement issued on September 22, 2025, to mark the International Day of Peace, observed annually on September 21, Ayad asserted that the suffering of the Palestinian people in war-torn Gaza is the clearest test of the world's sincerity in its calls for peace. He remarked that the day loses its meaning if it is not directed toward ending injustice against the innocent and halting the machinery of war.

The Mufti expressed that celebrating the International Day of Peace is inconsistent with disregarding ongoing crimes of occupation and aggression. He cautioned that the international community's silence on violations against Palestinians reveals a double standard and highlights contradictions between rhetoric and the harsh reality faced by Gazans.

He underscored that true and comprehensive peace can only be attained by restoring rights, supporting the oppressed, and enabling the Palestinian people to live freely and securely on their land. Ayad emphasized that peace should not be a mere slogan repeated occasionally but a lasting commitment guiding international policies, reflecting shared humanity, and ensuring a safe future for coming generations, free from war and domination.

The theme for the 2025 International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, is 'Act Now for a Peaceful World.'
