New york: Mohamed Hassani, Assistant Minister of Health for Public Health Projects and Initiatives, confirmed Egypt's commitment to the 4th political declaration on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the enhancement of mental health and well-being. He emphasized the significance of this initiative as a crucial move to bolster international collaboration against diseases that account for over 70% of deaths worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Hassani made these remarks during Egypt's address at the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly. The speech, delivered on behalf of Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, underscored Egypt's political commitment to intensifying national and international efforts against NCDs. The session was part of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, attended by global leaders and officials from international organizations.
Hassani highlighted initiatives such as the early detection of nutrition-related issues among school students, with around 22 million screened for anemia, obesity, and stunted growth. He also discussed the National Program for Early Detection of Six Types of Cancer, which has improved diagnosis rates and treatment access.
Furthermore, Hassani referenced Egypt's leadership in global health, noting its collaboration with Spain and 39 other countries to advance a resolution on rare diseases at the World Health Assembly. This effort aims to develop a global action plan for improving healthcare for patients with these conditions.
Mental health was another focal point, with Egypt launching the Presidential Mental Health Initiative in 2024. This initiative aims to address prevention, early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation, underlining that 'there is no health without mental health.'
The speech concluded with a reaffirmation of Egypt's dedication to implementing the political declaration's provisions by expanding early screening services, enhancing cancer and mental health treatment, and ensuring sustainable financing within the universal health coverage system. Egypt also expressed its readiness to collaborate with other nations to achieve shared goals.
Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, noted that the speech highlighted the priority Egypt places on combating NCDs. This commitment is evident in initiatives like '100 Million Healthy Lives,' which has screened over 60 million citizens for diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, offering free treatment through a wide network of primary care units and hospitals.
