Egypt and France Engage in Talks on Sustainable Financing and Debt Relief

Yokohama: Minister of Planning Rania Al-Mashat engaged in discussions with William Roos, assistant minister of treasury of France for multilateral affairs, development and trade, and vice president of the Paris Club, on the sidelines of TICAD 9. The talks centered around sustainable financing and debt relief strategies.According to State Information Service Egypt, the discussions reviewed Egypt's active participation in global financing platforms, including the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) in Spain. They also addressed Egypt's upcoming involvement in the Summit of the Future in September 2024, which will focus on the Bridgetown Initiative. This initiative emphasizes reallocating Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to assist affected countries without increasing their debt burden.The meeting further explored Egypt's contribution to the African Development Bank's proposal for a hybrid capital-based mechanism. This mechanism aims to channel SDRs through multilateral development banks to aid developing countries in financing climate action and addressing development needs.Both parties also deliberated on recommendations concerning debt distress in developing nations. They highlighted the Multilateral Development Banks' (MDBs) report under the G20 Capital Adequacy Framework, emphasizing the importance of expanding concessional and low-cost financing options for developing economies.
