Hitachi Energy signs agreements with ENOWA and Saudi Electricity Company to design and develop the first phase of visionary NEOM region transmission system

Collaboration to accelerate the development of NEOM in Saudi Arabia with up to 9 gigawatts of power transmission capacity

Zurich, Switzerland, May 30, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader advancing a sustainable energy future for all, has signed agreements under the supervision and management of the Ministry of Energy with the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) and with ENOWA. The agreements include the supply of three high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems to end customer ENOWA, the utility company for NEOM in Northwest Saudi Arabia. Built with sustainability in mind, NEOM is among Saudi Arabia’s Giga-Projects1 reshaping the future of development. The three HVDC links will have a total power capacity of up to 9 gigawatts (GW).

The agreements include an order from ENOWA’s engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) partner, the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) awarded to Hitachi Energy and its consortium partner, Saudi Services for Electro Mechanical Works (SSEM), to provide one of the world’s first 3 GW, 525 kilovolt (kV) HVDC Light® transmission system connecting Oxagon, NEOM’s regional development, with the larger Yanbu area more than 650 kilometers away in Western Saudi Arabia.

Hitachi Energy’s scope of supply includes design, engineering, procurement of HVDC technology and commissioning of the HVDC Light converter stations. Whilst SSEM – a leading Saudi EPC specialized in power, water and industrial projects – will design and supply the AC equipment portion and perform the construction and the installation. The converter stations convert the power from AC to DC then back to AC for integration into the receiving grid. The converters will be sourced by and supplied to Saudi Electricity Company, who were contracted in 2022 by ENOWA to act as their EPCM to build this first HVDC system for NEOM.

Further to this, Hitachi Energy and ENOWA have signed an early works and capacity reservation agreement for two additional HVDC projects, each rated up to 3 GW. Under this agreement, both companies commit to having the resources and capacity necessary to implement these two HVDC systems. As part of a new scalable and modular regional network design that is targeted to seamlessly integrate future renewables and energy storage technologies in the NEOM Energy System, making it unique in terms of size and complexity. The co-operation will also explore opportunities to develop local competencies in the Kingdom, including ways to sustainably assemble the necessary HVDC Light components locally.

“We are delighted to strengthen our collaboration with ENOWA and Saudi Electricity Company in order to power one of the most visionary development projects of all time,” said Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy’s Grid Integration business. “As the world progresses towards a more sustainable future, our expertise and HVDC technologies are true enablers of the electrification of the global energy system and the transition to renewables.”

“By securing the first capacities for such an important part of our future grid in only one year since the decision to use this technology, we show ENOWA’s commitment to supporting Saudi Vision 2030 in collaboration with Saudi Electricity Company and Hitachi Energy,” said Thorsten Schwarz, Executive Director of Grid Technology & Projects, Energy of ENOWA.

ENOWA, NEOM’s energy and water company, produces and delivers clean and sustainable energy for industrial and commercial applications. The company benefits from NEOM’s greenfield site and strategic location in the northwestern part of Saudi Arabia, with abundant solar and wind resources. ENOWA will act as a catalyst and incubator for developing new, sustainable energy and water businesses while creating a robust economic sector regionally.

ENOWA seeks by its commitment to renewable energy and efficient water management, to become a global reference for industry leaders and setting a benchmark for sustainable economic circular systems around the world. Formed in 2022, ENOWA is the principal shareholder in the world’s largest green hydrogen production plant set to be commissioned in 2026 and will enable NEOM to be a global green hydrogen hub.

NEOM will be powered by 100 percent clean energy, through renewable solar, wind and green hydrogen-based energy. The region is designed to be a blueprint for sustainable urban living with minimal impact on the environment and enhanced livability.

Leading child mental health organisations call for global action against infant, child and adolescent trauma

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 30 May 2023 – Research has shown that most mental disorders develop in childhood and adolescence before the age of 25, with one-quarter of years lived by young people with disability due to mental and substance use disorders.

To address this pressing concern and mobilise global efforts, the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP), International Society for Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology (ISAPP), World Association for Infant Mental Health (WAIMH), and World Psychiatric Association Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (WPA-CAP) have jointly declared April 23 as the World Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Day (WICAMHD).

This year witnessed the second annual WICAMHD event under the theme of Stand Against Infant, Child and Adolescent Trauma.

Children and adolescents form one third of the world’s population. Childhood and adolescence are foundational years characterised by growth, learning, and carefree exploration. However, many around the world are inflicted by trauma and crisis – adverse experiences which research has shown to have long-lasting effects on their mental and physical well-being.

Studies also show that about 15 percent to 43 percent of girls and 14 percent to 43 percent of boys experience at least one traumatic experience.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are also contributing factors in the development of mental disorders in adult years. The indirect and compounding effects of this is a ballooning economic burden on society, especially in the areas of healthcare and productivity loss.

Children in war zones and natural disasters are particularly vulnerable. During the second annual WICAMHD event under, three renowned speakers shared their expertise on childhood trauma.

Dr Dennis Ougrin, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Visiting Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Global Mental Health, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London discussed the impacts of the war in Ukraine.

Dr Fusun Cetin Cuhadaroglu, Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey presented on the traumatising effects of the recent earthquake in Turkey.

Finally, Dr Michelle Miller, Director of Mental Health Programs, National Children’s Alliance, United States highlighted evidence-based response for children subjected to trauma. This was followed by a panel discussion.

In addition to the main event, several national organisations held events and advocacy efforts commemorating WICAMHD.

These include the Indian Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (IACAM), the Lithuanian Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (LVPPD), the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the Austrian Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy (ASCAP) and the Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, College of Psychiatrists, Academy of Medicine, Singapore (SCAP).

Poet Galal El Beheiry’s poetic protest and the perils of expression in Egypt

Galal El Beheiry, Egyptian poet, lyricist, and activist has been in detention since March 2018 due to his satirical poem “Balaha.” Despite his imprisonment, he recently managed to smuggle a letter from notorious Badr prison in Cairo, where he remains incarcerated. In the letter, he declares his determination to continue his ongoing 81-day hunger strike, escalating his protest against his arbitrary imprisonment and the conditions of his detention by embarking on a water strike, starting June 1, 2023.

The perilous power of satirical poetry and music in Egypt

The poem “Balaha” was adapted into a song on February 26, 2018, just a month before the presidential elections, through a collaboration with Ramy Essam, an exiled human rights defender and renowned rock musician. Ramy Essam, widely hailed as the symbolic voice of the Egyptian revolution in 2011, rose to prominence with his powerful performance of the song “Irhal” in 2011, in front of millions of people in Tahiri Square. “Irhal” boldly called for the resignation of then-President Hosni Mubarak.

The word “balaha” means “date” (the fruit), but carries a nuanced meaning that extends beyond its literal translation. Rooted in Egyptian folklore, it carries symbolic weight, indirectly alluding to derogatory stereotypes associated with immoral women. Additionally, the term also draws a connection to the name of a character afflicted with a mental disorder and delusions of grandeur in a renowned Egyptian film from the 1980s.

In this particular context, the song’s lyrics were perceived as a veiled critique of President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi’s first four-year rule, exploring socio-political issues such as the state of Egyptian economy and different levels of political corruption. The poem is part of a collection called “The finest women on earth,” which sarcastically alludes to the military. The poetry collection highlights the value and achievements of Egyptian women, despite their unique challenges. It also criticizes the silence surrounding recent events, urging a shift in public attitudes towards terrorism and conflict, in line with the values of courage, honor, and respect instilled in El Beheiry from a young age.

As evidence of the song’s impact, the music video has amassed more than 7.3 million views on YouTube as of May 26, 2023.

The release of the song “Balaha” provoked considerable offense, resulting in the arrest of eight individuals, including an innocent Egyptian citizen who had no involvement with the song but was merely listening to it in his car in Kuwait. Subsequently, he was deported to Egypt where he was arrested.

Among those arrested were Galal El Beheiry, who was detained at Cairo airport 5 days after the song’s release, and Shadi Habash (1995–2020), the Egyptian filmmaker who directed the song. They faced the familiar charges commonly used against dissidents, such as “joining a terrorist group,” spreading false news,” and “abuse of social media.” In their case, they also faced additional charges of “blasphemy” and “insulting the military establishment.”

Tragically, after enduring two years in pretrial detention, Habash passed away in Tora prison in Cairo in May 2020 at the age of 24. While authorities claimed his death resulted from alcohol poisoning, activists attributed it to medical negligence. Reports indicated that his cellmates pleaded for medical help, but their appeals were ignored by prison authorities, ultimately leading to his demise.

Ramy Essam released another song called “El Amis el Karoo” (The flannel shirt) on November 27, 2020 to commemorate the 1000th day of El Beheiry’s arrest. The lyrics of the song are based on another poem written by El Beheiry during his time in Tora prison in June 2018. During that period, El Beheiry wrote several poems including one titled “A letter from Tora Prison,” which was published by various PEN centers around the world.

El Beheiry’s quest for justice and freedom

El Beheiry was initially arrested on March 5, 2018 and could not be traced for a week. He later appeared in a Supreme State Security Prosecution court, a special branch of the Public Prosecution responsible for prosecuting crimes that relate to “state security,” showing signs of torture. He was informed that he was facing charges from a military court related to his unpublished poetry collection “The finest women on Earth” and the lyrics of the song “Balaha.” On July 31, 2018, he was sentenced to 3 years in prison and fined 10,000 Egyptian pounds. However, he was not released after completing his sentence. Instead, he was added to a new case, with the same charges and has been in pretrial detention since then.

On March 5, 2023, Al Beheiry began his hunger strike, protesting his arbitrary imprisonment and detention conditions, even after completing his three-year prison sentence. After 81 days of the hunger strike, on May 25, 2023, he successfully smuggled a letter out from inside his prison cell.

The letter was shared with Global Voices by a newly formed collective comprising over 200 Egyptian citizens, human right defenders, and journalists who have been actively advocating for political prisoners. They are urging for a boycott of the national dialogue in Egypt until authorities put an end to the systematic disappearances of citizens and their unlawful incarceration.

Galal El Beheiry’s letter from Bader prison

Translation Original Quote

Against a life coerced, against the prison grave, against the colors of the cell walls that enslave. Against the logic of iron bars that confine, against the touch of sun, denied behind bars and iron twine. Against the military habitude, against the prison food. Against the ceaseless lights, burning bright against the 20 minutes, once a month, to receive visits in grab and cloth. Against the ban on paper and pencils, on lighter, on anything non-white, against the color white. Against the 1912 nights without a glimpse of the moon, except for one fortuitous boon. Against dreams that wither with time, join my other wasted dreams; of love, of a home, of a family that gleams, of fatherhood at thirty, so serene. Being by my little sister’s side through each arduous stride, in life’s vast sea, where challenges collide. Dancing with her on her grand night so bright, standing close to my mother and father as age takes its bite. Against my own self, as I drift away each passing day, losing touch with the human inside, led astray. As I turn into a creature of concrete, in a place of concrete, by a law of concrete. Against all of this, in defense of what’s left within, on the impending 1st of June, my battle will begin, a strike against life itself, with a fervent plea, to reclaim life, and set myself free. Galal El Beheiry

Egypt and Turkey mend fences after coup fallout

Egypt and Turkey have agreed to restore full diplomatic relations.

The move follows a phone call from Egypt’s Presiden Atbdul Fattah al-Sisi to congratulate the Turkish leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on his election victory on Sunday.

The two agreed to arrange the exchange of ambassadors immediately.

Egypt and Turkey fell out in 2013 after Mr Erdogan described Mr Sisi’s overthrow of Egypt’s then-President Mohammed Morsi an “unacceptable coup”.

In later years the two countries backed opposing factions in Libya and were at odds over maritime borders in the gas-rich eastern Mediterranean.

Egypt is also mending fences with Iran. The two countries are expected to exchange ambassadors later this year.

No damages reported in Jordan’s Free Zones following recent floods

The Jordanian Free Zones have emerged unscathed from recent floods that swept through the region on Monday, as no losses or damages occurred in Zarqa and the airport, according to Director General of Jordan Free and Development Zones Group (JFDZ), Abdul Hameed Gharaibeh.

Speaking to the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on Tuesday, Gharaibeh indicated that the water canal, which was established last year, successfully absorbed the entirety of the floodwaters, safeguarding the surrounding areas.

“Despite the heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in Zarqa and the airport regions, the well-prepared infrastructure and effective flood management measures prevented any significant damage,” he said, highlighting the importance of the deployment of appropriate heavy equipment and fast water pumps to mitigate the effects of the floods.
