UN Allocates $11 Million for Gaza Aid Amid Ceasefire and Hostage Release

Sharm el-Sheikh: The United Nations has announced an $11 million allocation to bolster aid efforts in the Gaza Strip, amidst a fragile ceasefire and recent hostage releases. The funding, revealed by Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher, is aimed at enhancing the provision of essential services such as food, water, healthcare, and shelter for civilians who have endured two years of conflict.

According to EMM, this latest allocation follows a previous $9 million designated last week to ensure fuel supplies for hospitals and crucial services, bringing the total recent Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) support for Gaza to $20 million. The financial aid comes as a ceasefire, facilitated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, holds firm, alongside the exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees. UN Secretary-General has termed this development as a 'fragile hope' for calm following months of turmoil.

UN teams have reported progress in humanitarian efforts, with Israeli approval secured for the entry of 190,000 metric tonnes of aid into Gaza. Among the aid, cooking gas has been allowed into the region for the first time since March, with additional food, tents, and medical supplies being dispatched daily. The UN's humanitarian scale-up is seen as a critical step during what has been described as a moment of precarious hope, requiring patience, creativity, and sustained generosity.
