Transport Minister Announces Launch of Cairo Monorail and High-Speed Rail Trial

Cairo: Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel el Wazir announced on Monday that the first phase of the Cairo Monorail will commence operations on Sunday, November 9, alongside the trial operation of the high-speed electric train.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Wazir made this announcement while delivering a speech at the second edition of the Cairo Forum, organized by the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies. The event saw participation from officials and experts from 27 countries. The East Cairo Monorail is set to significantly enhance connectivity between Greater Cairo and new urban communities to the east, including New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital. It aims to facilitate the movement of employees and commuters from Cairo and Giza to these emerging cities.

The East Cairo Monorail line will integrate with the third metro line at Stadium Station in Nasr City and connect with the Light Rail Transit at the Arts and Culture Station in the New Administrative Capital. The project stretches from the Stadium Station in Nasr City to the Monorail Control and Operations Center in the New Administrative Capital, spanning 56.5 kilometers and comprising 22 stations. The total length of both East and West Nile Monorail projects is 100 kilometers, featuring 35 stations overall. Each monorail train currently consists of four carriages, with plans to expand to eight as population density increases in the newly developed areas.
