PM Reviews Progress on Seawater Desalination Projects Amid Rising Water Demand

Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli emphasized the government's commitment to closely monitoring seawater desalination projects as part of Egypt's strategic plan to efficiently manage water resources. This initiative aims to increase reliance on desalinated water, particularly in coastal governorates where the demand is surging.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the Prime Minister highlighted that this strategy is essential due to Egypt's fixed quota of Nile water and the rising demands from agriculture, industry, and developmental projects. The government is actively seeking to attract international firms to localize technology and expand the desalination sector, facilitating sustainable growth.

The remarks were made during a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on August 24th, 2025, to assess the progress of current implementations and explore new proposals. The meeting included key figures such as Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Sherif El-Sherbini, Deputy Minister Sayed Ismail, and ACWA Power Egypt CEO Hassan Amin. Mamdouh Raslan, Chairman of the Holding Company for Drinking Water, was also present, along with other officials.

Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), participated in the discussions via video conference. During this session, ACWA Power's CEO presented the outcomes of negotiations with the housing ministry regarding the initiation of a new desalination project. The CEO reiterated the company's commitment to collaborating with Egypt to advance this critical sector.
