Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli has emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue of buildings at risk of collapse in Alexandria. He previously called for a comprehensive survey of such structures across the nation, underscoring the need for a strategic approach within the Ministry of Housing to develop a government-backed program akin to those for unsafe and social housing projects. Alexandria is highlighted as a top priority due to the significant number of vulnerable buildings in the governorate.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Prime Minister Madbouli chaired a meeting at the government's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to evaluate the status of these at-risk buildings and discuss solutions for providing alternative housing to affected residents. During the meeting, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Sherif El-Sherbini detailed efforts to coordinate the identification and assessment of at-risk buildings nationwide. This includes determining their ownership status, structural integrity, and potential sites for new housing developments.
El-Sherbini noted that several meetings have been conducted with the Alexandria Governorate to explore land options for constructing new housing units. Additionally, coordination with the Minister of Local Development is ongoing to establish specialized engineering committees tasked with regular inspections of potentially dangerous buildings in various governorates. In related efforts, similar meetings have been held with the Cairo Governorate to oversee the survey of buildings at risk of collapse within the city.
