Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said that eco-friendly, green mass transportation projects under construction are essential to Egypt's development strategy. He stressed the need to complete them quickly, in line with presidential directives, as they serve urban, industrial, and tourism growth.
According to State Information Service Egypt, this statement was made during a meeting to follow up on the implementation of the high-speed electric rail network and the east and west Nile monorail projects. The meeting was attended by ministers and officials involved in transport, finance, investment, and planning.
Transport and Industry Minister Kamel el Wazir provided a detailed update on the high-speed rail project. The first line, spanning 660 kilometers, connects Ain Sokhna to Marsa Matrouh via the New Administrative Capital, Alexandria, and New Alamein. This line includes 21 stations and is currently 67 percent complete.
Wazir also explained that the second and third lines will connect Al-Ayyat to Abu Simbel and Qena to Safaga and Hurghada. This will create a 1,275-kilometer-long network linking Upper Egypt with logistics hubs, development zones, and tourist destinations. These lines are expected to serve over 1.5 million passengers daily and move eight million tons of cargo annually.
The network aims to support new urban centers, agriculture, tourism, and industrial zones. It follows the route of the proposed Development Corridor, designed to accommodate population growth and boost regional economies.
The minister also reviewed the east and west Nile monorail projects. The east line runs 56.5 kilometers from Cairo Stadium to the New Administrative Capital with 22 stations, and the full fleet of 40 trains has already been delivered. The west line stretches 43.8 kilometers from 6th of October City to Wadi El Nile in Mohandessin and includes 13 stations. Both monorail lines will connect with the Cairo Metro, the high-speed rail network, and other key transport hubs. They are expected to reduce traffic, cut pollution, and improve mobility across Greater Cairo while creating jobs during both construction and operation. The east line is being prepared for opening in the near future.
