Parl’t Speaker: Food security is a matter of top priority for Egypt

House of Representatives Speaker Hanafy Gebaly asserted that food security is a matter of top priority for Egypt, adding that its strategy at present is much focused on encouraging local production of food and securing a safe strategic stock of basic food commodities to guarantee that the country is not affected by the growing global turmoils.

This came in Gebaly’s word during the inauguration of the 5th Congress of Speakers of Arab Councils and Parliaments organized by the Arab Parliament where a document will be tackled on the issue of Arab food security under the rubric “vision of parliament to boost Arab food security”.

The Egyptian state has been working on providing the local market with food supplies from the global markets and withstanding the global turbulences, especially economic ones, while encouraging local productivity and presenting incentives to encourage local farmers to produce the biggest possible quantities of strategic harvests, especially wheat, in addition to carrying out major agricultural projects, such as that of the New Delta, he said.

He highlighted the national greenhouse project that was launched on an area of 100,000 feddans to increase local production of crops, reduce imports and safeguard Egypt’s food security.

Gebaly concluded his speech by calling for unifying efforts to achieve sustainable Arab food security.
