India’s Modi reviews preparedness for summer season heat waves

NEW DELHI: With global warming on the rise and the dire challenges of climate change, India is bracing for unprecedented heat waves in the coming summer months, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in New Delhi.

At a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he was ‘briefed about the temperature outlook for the period from April to June 2024, including forecasts for these three months of the hot weather season and the likelihood of above normal maximum temperatures over most parts of the country,’ the PMO said in a press release.

At this meeting, Modi reviewed preparedness in the health sector in terms of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, ice packs, oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and drinking water, the press release said.

Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of Power said that to help meet high electricity demand during the peak summer season, it has operationalised gas-based power plants, which have remained unutilised ‘due to commercial considerations.’

Other steps announced by the Min
ister for Power, New and Renewable Energy, R K Singh, include shifting of regular maintenance of power plants to the monsoon season, speeding up new electricity capacity on an emergency basis, utilising captive generating stations and offering sale of power in Energy Exchanges.

‘India’s electricity demand has been rising rapidly, driven by economic growth, particularly during hot-weather and high-demand period,’ the Ministry said.
