IDSC launches its annual report “Egypt Through the Eyes of the World 2022”

The Information and Decision Support Center of the Council of Ministers released on Sunday 22/1/2023 its annual report “Egypt Through the Eyes of the World 2022” in its fifth edition, which monitors the development of Egypt’s performance in a number of development areas during 2022 through indicators and reports issued by 60 international and regional institutions.

Mr. Osama Al-Jawhari, Assistant Prime Minister, Head of the Information Centre, explained that the report was divided into 4 main interlocutors: The economic hub, which focuses on Egypt’s resilience and the ability of the economy to cope with successive crises, digital transformation and entrepreneurship which highlights digital transformation efforts and the future of Egypt’s startups, The social hub, which focuses on human and community development efforts, and Egypt’s role at the international level s efforts to combat climate change in the light of its hosting of the Cop27 Climate Conference.

With regard to the economic axis, the head of the Center noted that international institutions praised the ability of the Egyptian economy to cope with global economic crises, beginning with the COVID pandemic – 19, the crisis of global supply chains and the negative consequences of the Ukrainian crisis, adding that despite those challenges, Egypt’s economy had achieved a 6.6% growth rate in 2022, with expectations that Egypt would attract $22 billion in investment over the coming period.

Mr. Osama Al-Jawhari said that Egypt’s hotel sector had achieved a boom in recent years. Egypt became the leading African country in hotel projects in 2022, as well as the development of external sector indicators and foreign exchange sources In addition to the development of Egypt’s center in the indicators of travel and tourism, as well as the automotive industry and smart industries s economy, which will lead to the recovery of foreign investment rates in the medium term.

With regard to digital transformation and entrepreneurship, the head of the center explained that Egypt was among the top 3 countries attracted to investing in start-ups in the Middle East and North Africa region. 11 Egyptian startup was able to attract investments of about $ 508.5 million in 2022. Egypt jumped 42 positions in the Digital Government Maturity Index 2022 according to the World Bank to become in the Developed Countries category (A). It also jumped 34 positions in the Postal Development Index 2022, and 5 Egyptian companies became among the most important 25 financial technology companies in the Middle East region in 2022. This reflects the scale of efforts made in the development of services. The Economist Research Unit also confirmed the development of Egypt’s Internet by advancing 4 centres in the comprehensive Internet Index in 2022.

Turning to the social axis, he confirmed the annual report of the Council of Ministers’ Information Centre. Egypt advanced for the third consecutive year in the World Soft Power Index Egypt was ranked 31st in 2022, compared to 38th in 2020, and Egypt was ranked among the top 8 African countries on the Sustainable Development Goals Index. It achieved the world’s 97th place in the Human Development Index (HDI), having advanced about 19 places on that index, International and regional institutions also highlighted Egypt’s strengthening of the local social protection network Egypt has advanced many international classifications of education and scientific research.

With regard to the environmental axis, he referred to Egypt’s hosting of the COP27 climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, which had culminated in Egypt’s efforts over the past years to bring about a qualitative shift in energy and environmental conservation, in conjunction with the implementation of unprecedented national projects; Egypt topped many regional lists in the field of electricity generation from the sun and wind, expanded in the field of green hydrogen, especially within the economic zone of the Suez Canal, and became the first Arab in hydrogen production projects with about 23 projects in 2022, demonstrating Egypt’s ability to diversify its resources, conserve its wealth and develop it in keeping with the needs of its future children.

The President of the Centre for Information and Decision Support concluded his remarks by noting that the international indicators and reports contained in the report “Egypt in the Eyes of the World 2022” showed the resilience of various sectors of the Egyptian economy; This is despite the global geostrategic crisis affecting the joints of the international economy.
