FM Urges Denmark to Push Israel on Gaza Ceasefire, Aid Access

Cairo: Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Minister Badr Abdelatty called on Denmark to step up pressure on Israel to accept a proposed ceasefire and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, where the humanitarian situation has deteriorated into famine. During a phone call with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Abdelatty criticized Israel's lack of response to the ceasefire proposal and emphasized the need for effective European action, especially as Denmark chairs the EU Council and holds a non-permanent UN Security Council seat for 2025-2026. According to State Information Service Egypt, the ministers also discussed bilateral ties, with Abdelatty praising the upgrade of Egypt-Denmark relations to a strategic partnership following President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's December 2024 visit. He expressed hope for deeper economic cooperation and increased Danish investments in Egypt. The top Egyptian diplomat welcomed moves by several Western nations to recognize the Palestinian State and urged Denmark to follow suit, calling it essential for lasting regional stability. He also welcomed Denmark's continued support for UNRWA and encouraged its active participation in a planned Cairo-hosted conference on Gaza recovery and reconstruction.
