Tokyo: Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development Rania Al-Mashat stressed the need for robust governance frameworks to ensure that artificial intelligence and digital technologies serve people fairly and sustainably. She said that AI has become a key driver in tackling complex development challenges and reshaping growth models.According to State Information Service Egypt, Al-Mashat made these remarks during a session organized by the United Nations University at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), under the theme 'Governance in the Digital Age: Lessons for Africa.'Al-Mashat highlighted Egypt's role in sharing its expertise with African nations, advancing responsible AI governance, and promoting South-South and triangular cooperation. She noted that Egypt played a leading role in drafting the African Continental AI Strategy, which was launched in August 2024 and focuses on ethical and sustainable governance. Additionally, Egypt represents North Africa on the AU Advisory Group on Artificial Intelligence, addressing its impact on peace, security, and governance.She emphasized that Africa has a unique opportunity to leverage AI for inclusive and sustainable development, given that more than 60 percent of its population is under 25 and the digital economy is expected to add $180 billion to the continent's GDP.Al-Mashat also referenced presidential directives for clear strategies to harness AI and strengthen research and development in the country. She mentioned that the government has taken pioneering steps in AI governance and capacity-building, while also supporting start-ups to empower innovators and entrepreneurs in deploying emerging technologies across vital sectors.
