Cairo: The Ministry of Finance announced the release of a new collection of non-circulating gold and silver commemorative coins to mark the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), one of Egypt's most significant cultural landmarks and the world's largest museum dedicated to ancient Egyptian civilization.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk stated that the new coins, produced by the General Egyptian Treasury and Mint Authority, document the GEM's architectural and archaeological features. Dr. Sherif Hazem, advisor to the finance minister for engineering affairs, explained that the series includes six denominations: 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 pounds. Each coin bears a unique design inspired by elements of the museum, such as the Hanging Obelisk, the main fa§ade and entrance, the Solar Boats, the statue of Ramses II, and the golden mask of Tutankhamun. He noted that each coin will be accompanied by a certificate providing historical background and technical details, prepared in coordination with GEM CEO Ahmed Ghoneim.
Gamal Hussein, head of the Egyptian Treasury and Mint Authority, mentioned that the coins were fully designed and manufactured by the authority's team of designers, engineers, and technicians in line with international quality standards. He added that the release date and points of sale will be announced to coincide with the museum's official opening. Hussein emphasized that this collection continues the ministry's tradition of commemorating Egypt's major national projects, such as the New Suez Canal, the New Administrative Capital, and the Decent Life initiative.
