Cairo: Egypt has raised cash assistance under its Takaful and Karama social protection programme by 25 per cent as part of efforts to strengthen support for low-income families, the Egyptian Cabinet said in a statement Tuesday.

According to State Information Service Egypt, during a high-level meeting, Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy informed Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly that there is no waiting list for new beneficiaries. From July 2024 to July 2025, approximately 800,000 families joined the programme while 600,000 exited or graduated. The scheme now supports 7.7 million families nationwide, with about 3 million having exited since its launch.

Minister Morsy stated that the government has completed the first phase of integrating Takaful and Karama beneficiary data with the universal health insurance system, with the second phase underway. Beneficiaries in governorates covered by the insurance scheme will be notified via text message once their records are linked.

She further mentioned that the ministry's work focuses on social protection, economic empowerment, and legislative reform, with the ministry overseeing about 60 per cent of Egypt's 22 social protection programmes. The Social Protection Platform was launched in May 2025, and Egypt plans to debut an international version next year to enhance cooperation and knowledge-sharing in the field.
