Port said: Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Manal Awad announced the launch of the 'Waste Reduction Project in Port Said,' implemented in cooperation with the Waste Management Regulatory Authority, the Ministry of Local Development, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Port Said Governorate. The project will run from 2025 until June 2028. According to State Information Service Egypt, Awad explained that the initiative aims to improve the solid waste management system, enhance plastic recycling, and support local recycling initiatives, providing a pilot model that can be replicated nationwide. The project focuses on knowledge exchange in waste management, supporting local recycling, capacity building, promoting household waste segregation, and reducing single-use plastic bags by encouraging eco-friendly alternatives. She stressed that the project aligns with the Waste Management Regulatory Authority's role as planner and regulator of Egypt's waste management system, in parallel with the legal framework established by the Waste Law No. 202 of 2020 and its executive regulations. A series of meetings has already been held to assess the current situation in Port Said, identify target areas and waste streams, and develop an implementation plan that includes training, public awareness campaigns, and regulatory measures. A comprehensive roadmap will also be prepared to expand the Port Said model to other governorates.
