Berber: Six people have lost their lives and up to 20 others remain trapped following a collapse at a gold mine in northern Sudan, officials have reported. The incident took place on Friday in the Um Aud area, situated west of Berber in River Nile state, as confirmed by Hassan Ibrahim Karar, the executive director of the Berber locality.

According to Nam News Network, rescue efforts are currently underway to reach those trapped beneath the debris. The cause of the collapse at the artisanal mine has yet to be determined. Sudan, recognized as Africa's third-largest country by area, is also one of the continent's leading gold producers. Despite this, the majority of its gold is extracted through artisanal and small-scale mining operations that lack adequate safety measures and often involve the use of hazardous chemicals, posing significant health risks to miners and surrounding communities.

Before recent conflicts exacerbated food insecurity for 25 million Sudanese, artisanal mining was a source of employment for more than two million individuals, as industry figures indicate. Experts in the mining sector note that a significant portion of the gold produced is smuggled by both warring factions through neighboring countries such as Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt, eventually reaching the UAE, which is currently the world's second-largest gold exporter.
