Assistant FM: Great Lakes Crisis Demands Urgent Collective Response

Paris: Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs Mohamed Karim Sherif asserted Egypt's firm support for efforts to achieve peace across the region, emphasizing that the current humanitarian crisis in the Great Lakes region demands an urgent and comprehensive collective response.

According to State Information Service Egypt, this statement was made during Sherif's participation in the 'Conference on Peace and Prosperity in the Great Lakes Region,' held in Paris and jointly organized by France and Togo. Sherif highlighted the importance of mobilizing greater regional and international efforts to increase funding for the Great Lakes region, noting that current levels fall short of addressing the scale of the humanitarian crisis.

The conference was attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, the Congolese president, and the Prime Minister of Togo, along with representatives of regional and international organizations. In total, 70 delegations participated, including civil society organizations active in humanitarian work across the Great Lakes region.

The event aimed to highlight the pressing humanitarian situation facing the region, focusing on the need for coordinated international and regional efforts to mobilize the financial support required to alleviate human suffering, promote stability, and foster sustainable development.
