Al-Azhar Grand Imam Strengthens Ties with Sudanese Envoy

Cairo: Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed El-Tayyeb emphasized the enduring ties between Al-Azhar and Sudan during a meeting with Sudanese Ambassador to Cairo, Imad El-Din Mostafa Adawi. The meeting, held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, focused on enhancing scientific and cultural support for Sudanese students at Al-Azhar.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the Grand Imam highlighted the historical significance of the 'Senariyyah Riwaq' at Al-Azhar Mosque, a special section dedicated to Sudanese students. He noted that currently, about 10,000 Sudanese students are enrolled at Al-Azhar, with 888 receiving scholarships. Additionally, Al-Azhar provides 220 annual scholarships to Sudanese students aspiring to join Al-Azhar University.

The Grand Imam expressed Al-Azhar's unwavering solidarity with Sudan, describing the nation as 'dear to every Muslim and Arab' amidst its challenging humanitarian circumstances. He urged the Sudanese people to prioritize unity and fraternity, emphasizing the importance of standing together to support Sudan's national interests and maintain the country's unity, stability, and territorial integrity.

In response, the Sudanese ambassador conveyed his appreciation for the meeting and commended Al-Azhar's pivotal role in disseminating the true teachings of Islam, promoting moderation, and supporting global Muslim communities through education and cultural initiatives. He acknowledged Al-Azhar as a significant religious reference for the Sudanese populace.
