Minister: Gov’t e-payment system effective tool for transitioning to cashless economy

The government e-payment and collection system, launched in May 2019, is one the most important tools for building a “digital Egypt,” Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait said Saturday 07/05/2022.

It is also one of the government’s tools for transitioning to a cashless economy, promoting financial inclusion, to move towards the “new Republic,” which helps improve government performance, enhance public services, and fostering good governance and transparency, Maait added in a statement released by the ministry.

Commending the outstanding performance of the digital payment system over the past 34 months, Maait revealed that around EGP 3.7 trillion was paid through it for e-payment and e-collection services, while EGP 1.144 trillion was paid in taxes and customs, and EGP 3.304 billion was paid via the government e-payment portal to government e-payment and collection center and its affiliated collection companies.

He said that citizens are not required to pay any additional fees to use the government e-payment channels, noting that those fees are charged to the public treasury pursuant to the directives of the National Payments Council.

Meanwhile, head of the government e-payment and collection unit at the Finance Ministry Mohamed Fouad highlighted the unit’s important role at the regional level, given its constructive contributions to achieving economic integration within the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the largest economic bloc in Africa.

The Ministry of Finance issued Decree No. 269/2018 on collection procedures of the government, tax and customs receivables through electronic payment and collection system. It stipulates that all payments of all governmental dues, including tax and customs in excess of EGP 100,000 will be through electronic payment and collection system.

PM says industrial sector tops government’s priorities

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said that the industrial sector tops the government’s priorities based on directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

During a meeting on Saturday 07/05/2022 with Trade and Industry Minister Nevin Gamea, the premier said that the government continues to take measures to promote the Egyptian industrial sector with the participation of the private sector.

The premier made reference to directives of President Sisi to increase reliance on local products and reduce imports by strengthening the role of the private sector on that score.

Madbouli stressed that the government is keen to provide more incentives to support the industrial sector and facilitate the issuance of licenses for factories to operate industrial projects.

Gamea, for her part, reviewed executive steps taken to increase reliance on the national industry, including preparing a list of investment opportunities available in the industrial sector.

These steps include providing local alternatives for 131 products to meet the needs of the local market, the minister said.

She noted that the industrial investment map was activated as a platform to promote all industrial projects.

PM probes executive plan to execute Sisi’s directives for luring more investments

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli and Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El Saeed reviewed Saturday 07/05/2022 the measures the government will take to implement President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives during the Egyptian Family Iftar banquet late April.

During a meeting with the planning minister and CEO of the Sovereign Fund of Egypt Ayman Mohamed Soliman, Madbouli discussed how to implement Sisi’s directives following a time-bound executive plan to lure further investments, and promote cooperation with sisterly Arab nations in the Gulf region.

The meeting also tackled the role investment funds could play on that score, the cabinet said in a statement.

The plan will cover presidential directives to the government about setting a program for the private sector’s participation in state-owned assets, and listing state-owned shares army-owned enterprises on the Egyptian stock exchange before year end, Cabinet Spokesman Nader Saad said.

The plan will also cover Sisi’s orders to the government to launch an initiative aimed at entrenching local industries, reducing imports, and promoting the private sector’s role in strengthening micro, small, and medium scale industries, as well as the incentives proposed in this regard.

Madbouli said that a news conference will be held early next week to reveal the State’s plan for dealing with the global economic crisis, the spokesman noted.

Briefing the prime minister on investment opportunities available in various state sectors, especially water desalination and green hydrogen projects, Saeed said special consultants will be tasked with evaluating the companies set to be listed on the Egyptian stock exchange.
