Sweilam Emphasizes Integration of Egypt Vision 2030 and Climate Change in Water Strategy

Sweilam: The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Hani Sewilam, emphasized the necessity of incorporating the objectives of Egypt Vision 2030 and the Climate Change Strategy 2050 in the revision of the Egyptian Water Resources Strategy for 2050. This integration is essential to align with the state’s future ambitions.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Dr. Sewilam highlighted the importance of including major ongoing projects in the water sector within the updated strategy. This involves expanding water treatment and reuse, promoting desalination for food production, embracing digital transformation, and implementing smart water management solutions. The strategy should also consider climate change impacts on Egypt’s water sector and align the Water Resources Strategy indicators with the National Climate Change Strategy 2050.

The discussion took place during a meeting led by the Minister of Irrigation, attended by various ministry leaders, to review the status of the strategy update. T
he meeting aimed to present the revised general framework of the strategy and explore its connection with the National Water Resources Plan for 2050.

Proposals were made to integrate elements of the second generation water system, known as Water 2.0, into the strategy’s executive plans. There was consensus on the terms of reference for hiring a consultant to develop the strategy and its implementation plans in accordance with the updated framework.

Dr. Sewilam also stressed the need for governance principles to define the roles of different institutions. He called for clear executive plans for both ministry entities and partner ministries, establishing criteria to monitor and evaluate the success of the strategy’s objectives.
