Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli said Friday that food insecurity in Africa posed mounting pressures and challenges, exacerbated in the wake of the global challenges, topped by the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, the Russian-Ukrainian war, and climate change.
Madbouli’s comments came in a speech, delivered on his behalf Agriculture Minister Al Sayed Al Qusair during a senior-level meeting on food security in Africa, currently held in Abidjan, with the presence of vice president of Côte d’Ivoire, prime ministers, ministers, and representatives from international and regional agencies.
The Russian-Ukrainian war has worsened and exacerbated the crisis of food insecurity in the whole world, with the heavy brunt has fallen on the African continent, as a key importer to food.
This crisis resulted in energy and food price hikes that came in parallel with the global supply chain disruptions, he added.
He also highlighted the mounting risk of climate change on Africa, as it is most affected by the phenomenon, which badly hit the agricultural production; despite that Africa has always been the least contributors to global carbon emissions.
