NHRI participates in Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions meeting in Geneva

GENEVA: The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) is participating as an “Observer” in the Annual Meeting of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), which commenced today and will continue until 8th of May.

Leading the NHRI delegation during this three-day event is Maqsoud Kruse, the Chairperson of the Institution.

The Annual Meeting is the regular gathering of NHRIs from all around the world. It takes place in Geneva, normally in conjunction with a session of the UN Human Rights Council. The Meeting is organised by GANHRI in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The Meeting aims to exchange expertise and develop effective strategies to enhance human rights standards through regional network meetings and the General Assembly. This year’s Meeting features a “Business and Human Rights Conference: The Role and Experiences of NHRIs.”

The NHRI’s participation reflects its commitment to supporting fundamental human rights,
ensuring equality and justice without discrimination, and aligning with global human rights goals.

Highlighting the importance of these meetings, Kruse said, “It is an opportunity to enhance international cooperation and draw upon best practices from various international rights institutions, utilising this leading international gathering to expand collaboration and exchange experiences in all matters related to supporting human rights.”

Notably, the NHRI is participating for the second consecutive time in this annual Meeting, demonstrating its commitment to the Paris Principles and its concerted efforts to enhance its role as a key player in international human rights.

The participating delegation included members of the Board of Trustees and the General Secretariat of the NHRI, including Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Deputy Chairperson Board of Trustees.
