Cairo: Egypt and the European Union signed an administrative agreement to enhance cooperation and information-sharing in crisis management and disaster risk reduction, according to a statement released by the EU Embassy in Cairo on Sunday, June 7, 2026.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the agreement was signed by Christian Berger, Director of the Crisis Response Centre of the European External Action Service (EEAS), and Major General Tamer Abdelrahman, Assistant General Secretary of the Egyptian Cabinet and Head of the National Committee for Crisis Management and Disaster Risk Reduction. The signing was followed by discussions on shared challenges and priorities.
Berger presented an overview of the role of the EEAS Crisis Response Centre in supporting the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in responding to political, security, and consular crises outside the bloc. He also stressed the importance of cooperation with international partners and welcomed the signing of the agreement, while inviting Egyptian counterparts to continue exchanges with Brussels and visit the Crisis Response Centre.
For his part, Abdel Rahman welcomed the agreement and thanked the European Union for its close cooperation with Egypt. He highlighted the role of the National Committee for Crisis Management and Disaster Risk Reduction as a coordination mechanism bringing together relevant national authorities to respond to a wide range of emergencies, including natural disasters, accidents, security incidents, public health emergencies, and consular crises abroad.
Abdel Rahman stated that the committee supports crisis-management efforts across Egypt's 27 governorates and operates dedicated subcommittees monitoring regional crises, including developments in Gaza, Syria, and Sudan, as well as the Ebola outbreak. Both sides also exchanged views on Ebola monitoring arrangements and their respective approaches to crisis preparedness.
Egyptian officials described the agreement as a further step in strengthening collaboration between Egypt and the European Union, building on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed in 2024 and ahead of the 11th EU-Egypt Association Council meeting scheduled for June 15.
