Al Azhar focuses on spreading peace – Grand Imam

Al Azhar’s main message has always been to bring about and spread peace, said Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayyeb.

El-Tayyeb’s remarks came on Tuesday 28/2/2023 at a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his accompanying delegation in Cairo to probe means to strengthen cooperation between Hungary and the over 1,000-year-old prestigious Islamic institution.

The grand imam stressed that Al Azhar adopts a strategy to counter extremism locally and internationally, highlighting the establishment of its anti-extremism observatory in 13 languages and the Egyptian Family House which he chairs together with the pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

For his part, Orban lauded the great role played by the world’s highest seat of learning for Sunni Muslims, under the grand imam, to combat extremism and terrorism and spread moderate thought and peace.

Orban’s accompanying delegation included a host of Hungarian ministers, respective officials and Hungary’s Ambassador to Egypt Andras Kovacs, among others.
