ABU DHABI: NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), in partnership with Tamkeen, will host the 12th edition of the NYUAD Hackathon for Social Good in the Arab World from 25th-28th April. The international event, which is unique in the region, will welcome cross-disciplinary teams from around the world to solve challenges faced in the field of quantum computing (QC) and artificial intelligence (AI) related to QC. The aim is to develop ideas that contribute to social good with a view to furthering the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Teams of seven to ten talented students from across the globe, with a majority from the Arab world, will each be guided by two experts in the field from leading institutions. This includes renowned global computer science professors from the likes of the University of Oxford, ETH Zrich, MIT, and Stanford, along with founders of successful startups and technology professionals from Google, Meta, IBM, Qbraid, along with venture capitalists and other leading institutions such as Core42, and th
e Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA). This elite and unique gathering of mentors will teach the teams about top practices in QC, AI machine learning applications, and software developments through workshops, keynote speeches, and lighting talks during the marathon. The outcome will be the creation of applications by the students contributing to society.

NYUAD Affiliated Professor Sana Odeh, who founded and organises the event, commented, ‘The NYUAD Hackathon has successfully empowered generations of students from the Arab world and beyond to use the most advanced quantum hardware to confidently undertake challenges in quantum computing and AI-driven machine learning. It is important to note that this event is about more than technical upskilling. Equally valuable is the calibre of partnerships and participating experts on hand, which creates unprecedented networking opportunities for students. We have seen over the years how this opens the door to collaborations on future international projects
, inspires students to launch their own startups, and further academic research in the quantum computing field. It is our hope that this year’s Hackathon will once again cement the potential and capabilities of technology in making a positive impact on the future of our society and to assist young experts in tackling the challenges of our time.’

The three-day programming marathon was founded to contribute to social good in the Arab world and globally. The NYUAD International Hackathon for Social Good in the Arab World has seen more than 1,000 participants from more than 50 countries. The event has been a launchpad for the careers of past participants, who gained scholarships,
jobs, and even launched their own startups. Last year’s winners had the exceptional opportunity to present their winning project at the GESDA Summit in Geneva.

Egypt, China FMs to hold talks in Cairo on Sunday

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is set to hold talks on Sunday with his Chinese counterpart Qin Gang.

Shoukry is set to discuss with the Chinese minister, who is currently on a visit to Cairo, means to cement special ties between Egypt and China in all fields.

They will also probe a number of regional and international issues of common interest.

The ministers are set to hold a joint press conference after concluding their talks.

Egypt beat Croatia 31-22 in World Handball Championship

Egypt powered to their first World Handball Championship win ever against Croatia Friday 13/01/2023 in their Group G opener.

The Pharaohs threw off their campaign with a 31-22 win, capitalising on a good performance with a strong start against Croatia.

Ali Zein was named man of the match.

The national team tops the group with two points, before facing Morocco Sunday and the United States Tuesday.

The 2023 IHF World Men’s Handball Championship is the 28th such event hosted by the International Handball Federation. It is currently being held in Poland and Sweden from 11 to 29 January 2023. Denmark are the two-time defending World Champions, having won the 2019 and 2021 edition.

Egypt are one of the teams that have progressed the most in the last few years, boosted by seventh place at Egypt 2021 and fourth place at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

CAPMAS: Egyptian exports jump by 23.3% in 10 months to register dlrs 42.8bn

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said Friday 13/01/2023 that Egypt’s exports to world countries registered dlrs 42.8 billion in the first ten months of 2022, compared to dlrs 34.7 billion during the same period of 2021, marking an increase of 23.3%.

CAPMAS stated that the top 10 importers of Egypt’s exports are Spain (dlrs 3.1bn), Turkey (dlrs 3.1bn), Italy (dlrs 2.8bn), the United States (dlrs 2bn), Saudi Arabia (dlrs 2bn), Netherlands (dlrs 1.7bn), South Korea (dlrs1.95bn), France (dlrs 1.6bn), China (dlrs 1.6bn) and the United Arab Emirates (dlrs 1.5bn).

As for the top 10 commodities that Egypt exported during the first 10 months of 2022, they are as follows: liquefied natural gas (LNG), at a total value of dlrs 7.9 billion, fertilizers (dlrs 2.7 billion), crude oil (dlrs 2.6 billion), petroleum products (dlrs 2.6 billion), ready-made garments (dlrs 2.1 billion), plastics (dlrs 1.6bn), fresh fruits (dlrs 1.4 billion), various doughs and food preparations (dlrs 818.1 million), potatoes (dlrs 370.6 million) and carpets and hand-woven kilim rugs (dlrs 342.7 million).

Details of 54th edition of CIBF to be announced Monday

The administration of the Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF) is set to hold a press conference on Monday to reveal the details of the 54th edition of the event, slated for Jan. 25 in Cairo.

The conference is set to be attended by Culture Minister Nevin el Kilany, President of the General Egyptian Book Organization (GEBO) Ahmed Bahie Eddin and Jordan’s Ambassador to Egypt Amgad Al Adaylah, whose country has been named as guest of honor of the fair, among others.

Ministry: 136,000 quintals of cotton sold in 7 governorates

The Ministry of Public Business Sector announced that some 136,000 quintals of cotton were sold in auctions held on Thursday.

In a statement released on Friday 13/01/2023, the ministry said those actions were conducted in the governorates of Beheira, Kafr El-Sheikh, Sharqia, Gharbia, Dakahlia, Menoufia and Ismailia.

The highest selling price per quintal was EGP 7,785 in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate.

The new system guarantees fair prices for farmers, as cotton selling is implemented through auction, and the pricing policy is in line with global cotton prices.

Minister, TRS delegation discuss recycling used tires

Public Business Sector Minister Mahmoud Esmat discussed on Friday 13/01/2023 with Swiss Ambassador in Cairo Yvonne Baumann and a delegation of Tyre Recycling Solutions ways of cooperation to recycle used and damaged tires to be turned into several products.

TRS chairman explained to Esmat the company’s solutions to collect, process, and recycle tires to be a source for rubber powder which could be used in many industries, the Public Business Sector Ministry said in a statement.

The minister noted that the ministry pays attention to clean-powered projects in line with Egypt’s sustainable energy, adding the project will get rid of used tires.

PM underlines strategic importance of Arish Port

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli stressed the great strategic importance of Arish Port.

The port enjoys a unique location on the Mediterranean Sea and forms part of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), said Madbouli while inspecting, along with his accompanying delegation, the development works at Arish Port.

The upgrade works at Arish port came as part of directives issued by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to overhaul all ports across the country in an integrated manner to increase their competitiveness at the domestic and global levels.

For his part, North Sinai Governor Mohamed Abdel Fadeel Shousha said that ongoing development works at Arish Port came as part of directives issued by the political leadership.

The State is keen on reopening the port after its renovation in order to enhance the economic development in Egypt, especially in North Sinai, added the governor.

Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) Walid Gamal el Din, for his part, said that the development of Arish Port involves implementing a 500m-long berth and a wave barrier with a length of 1,250 meters.

The completion rate of the berth development project has so far reached 80 percent, he said, noting that efforts are under way to implement dredging operations.

The development works of Arish Port are scheduled to be finalized in the first quarter of 2024, he said.
