El Tayyeb says education top priority for Al Azhar in Africa

Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmed El Tayyeb said Tuesday that the most prominent Sunni organization puts education in Africa on its top priorities to support African countries and spread the moderate teachings of Islam.

He said that Al Azhar offers scholarships to many African countries including Tanzania and Senegal, sends envoys to them and train African scholars and preachers at Al Azhar training academy.

Tayyeb’s statements came during meetings with Egyptian ambassadors to Tanzania and Senegal Sherif Ismail and Khaled Aref, respectively.

The Grand Imam wished the diplomats success in their missions in African countries .

Mufti, Cypriot ambassador tackle religious cooperation

Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawki Allam said on Tuesday 25/10/2022 that Dar al-Ifta has fought extremism for years as it launched the Salam Center for Extremism Studies, which issues publications and studies against the extremist thoughts.

Allam was speaking during his meeting with Cypriot Ambassador in Cairo Polly Ioannou to discuss aspects of religious cooperation between Dar al-Ifta and Cyprus.

The mufti talked about women’s position in Islam and efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of overpopulation in addition to Dar al-Ifta’s keenness to cope with the current developments by launching Fatwa Pro, a multilingual app established to communicate with all Muslim communities.

Meanwhile, Ioannou lauded efforts exerted by Dar al-Ifta and the mufti to present a moderate religious discourse and fight extremism, looking forward to more cooperation at all levels. Source: State Information Service Egypt

Islamic council welcomes invitation of Sheikh Tayyeb, Pope Francis to Bahrain Forum for Dialogue

The Supreme Council For Islamic Affairs hailed an invitation by Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmed Tayyeb, the head of the Muslim Council of Elders, and Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, to visit Bahrain next month to participate in the Bahrain Forum for Dialogue: East and West for Human Coexistence.

According to a statement by the Al Azhar Sheikhdom, the council welcomed holding this international event under the auspices of the Bahraini monarch.

The Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs will organize the event alongside the Muslim Council of Elders and the King Hamad Global Center for Peaceful Coexistence.

The council also lauded Bahrain’s hosting of the Muslim Council of Elders’ ordinary session under Tayyeb, stressing full solidarity with its noble goals, especially for promoting peace in Muslim communities.

Recursion Announces $150 Million Private Placement to New and Existing Investors, led by Kinnevik AB

SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 25, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Recursion (NASDAQ: RXRX), the clinical-stage biotechnology company industrializing drug discovery by decoding biology, announced today that it has entered into a stock purchase agreement for the sale of an aggregate of approximately 15.3 million shares of its Class A common stock in a private placement, led by Kinnevik AB, with participation by Baillie Gifford, Mubadala Investment Company, Laurion Capital Management, Invus, and Platinum Asset Management. The price per share of $9.80 reflects an approximate 7% discount to the volume weighted average share price of Recursion’s Class A common stock over the five trading days ended on October 24, 2022.

Gross proceeds of the private placement are expected to be approximately $150 million, led by Kinnevik with a $75 million investment, before deducting placement agent fees and other expenses payable by Recursion. Morgan Stanley is acting as lead placement agent for the private placement. Berenberg, KeyBanc Capital Markets and Needham & Company are acting as co-placement agents for the private placement.

Recursion currently intends to use the net proceeds from this private placement, together with existing cash and cash equivalents, for general corporate purposes, which may include strategic investments in advancing of existing clinical and preclinical programs, including Recursion’s new clinical program in AXIN1/APC mutant cancers with an initial focus in hepatocellular carcinoma and ovarian cancer for which a Phase 2 trial is being planned, digital chemistry technologies, automated chemical microsynthesis technologies, industrialized validation and translation, and scientific and technical personnel as well as runway extension and other purposes.

 IAVI to Accelerate Promising Investigational Sudan Ebolavirus Vaccine Development for Potential Outbreak Research and Response

Merck will provide the investigational vaccine based on a proven platform technology

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / October 25, 2022 / IAVI, a nonprofit scientific research organization, and Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, have entered into an agreement that could enable IAVI to accelerate the entry of a promising Sudan ebolavirus (SUDV) vaccine candidate that IAVI is developing into clinical evaluation in response to the rapidly spreading outbreak of SUDV disease in Uganda.

Merck plans to produce and provide vials of candidate vaccine from existing investigational drug substance to IAVI to supplement IAVI’s ongoing SUDV vaccine development program. The investigational vaccine being produced is based on the same vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) viral vector platform that is used in ERVEBO®, Merck’s highly efficacious, single-dose Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV) vaccine that has achieved regulatory approval by the U.S. FDA, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and a number of regulatory authorities in Africa.

IAVI and Merck have been in discussions with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and other stakeholders regarding the potential production and supply of doses of investigational SUDV vaccine to help support the WHO’s efforts to conduct a clinical trial of vaccine candidates in Uganda, in partnership with the Government of Uganda.

Production schedules and quantities are still being defined. Based on the quantities of available bulk drug substance and current plans, Merck hopes to be able to deliver approximately 55,000 doses by the end of the year. IAVI is actively working to accelerate the manufacture of additional doses of IAVI’s VSV-SUDV vaccine should they be needed. The number of doses provided by Merck should be sufficient for conducting Phase I and efficacy studies as well as for public health response if the outbreak in Uganda continues or spreads and should the vaccine be shown to be safe and efficacious.

IAVI will act as developer and regulatory sponsor and will be responsible for all aspects of future development of the vaccine candidate.

No SUDV vaccines have been approved to date, and existing EBOV vaccines and treatments are not effective against SUDV. In the midst of the ongoing SUDV disease outbreak, ensuring that all promising vaccine candidates are evaluated for safety and efficacy could enable vaccine stockpiles to be established for use in future outbreaks.

Vesicular stomatitis virus is the vector that underpins ERVEBO® as well as IAVI’s portfolio of emerging infectious disease vaccine candidates. These include the SUDV vaccine candidate supported by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; a Lassa fever virus vaccine candidate currently in a Phase I trial and supported by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP); a Marburg virus vaccine candidate supported by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and BARDA; and an intranasal SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate supported by the Japan Ministry of Finance. VSV is a harmless animal virus; in the vaccine platform, it is engineered to encode a surface protein from a target pathogen – in this case, SUDV – that stimulates an immune response.

IAVI holds a nonexclusive license to the VSV vaccine candidates from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The vector was developed by scientists at PHAC’s National Microbiology Laboratory.
