Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Abbas Helmy returned home Monday after leading Egypt’s delegation to the 41st General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada.
The Assembly’s meeting aimed to review real steps taken to reconnect the world through partnerships and seamless air travel policies.
Egypt was re-elected as a member of the 36-nation governing council of the organization for an additional three years (from 2023-25) after a vote that saw the participation of 193 UN member states at the 41st Assembly meeting in the body headquarters in Montreal Saturday.
Egypt claimed 156 of 193 votes in the election.
The step was described as a reflection of the appreciation of the ICAO’s member states to Egypt as well as its contribution to the field of civil aviation.
Egypt also won the post of deputy head of ICAO’s Economic Commission.
Helmy asserted that the support of the political leadership in the aviation sector played a major role in boosting the status of Egyptian air transport at the regional and international levels.
Created in 1944, ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations, which promotes safe and orderly international civil aviation development internationally, setting standards and regulations for aviation safety, security, efficiency, and regularity, as well as for aviation environmental protection. Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias stressed on Monday that the outgoing government of national unity in Libya does not have the power to strike international deals or memoranda of understanding.
Shoukry received a phone call from Dendias, where the two top diplomats tackled bilateral relations and regional issues, atop of which is the Libyan crisis, Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid said.
The two ministers agreed on continuing consultations on issues of mutual concern, the spokesman added.

Petroleum Minister Tareq el Molla has unveiled big opportunities to enhance partnership between the Egyptian oil sector and the Saudi AlKhorayef Group.
The current stage entails increased partnerships with giant companies to push up oil production and boost local industrialization, Molla said in a meeting with Chairman of AlKhorayef Group Sheikh Saad AlKhorayef Monday.
The meeting took up promising investment opportunities to upgrade the petroleum industry in Egypt.
Molla said AlKhorayef’s oil activities in Egypt over the past years have had a positive outcome, adding it was a win-win partnership.
Molla directed to organize a joint workshop to activate cooperation and partnership agreements with AlKhorayef Group.

Egypt is opening its doors to local, Arab, and foreign investments, including the Kuwaiti investments, affirmed Finance Minister Mohamed Maait.
The minister, meanwhile, said that the political leadership is keen on stimulating private sector activity, especially that Egypt has an advanced infrastructure and ability to accommodate investment expansion in the various sectors.
Maait made the remarks during the Egyptian-Kuwaiti Economic Forum, which was held in the presence of Trade and Industry Minister Ahmed Samir, Chairman of the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry Muhammad Jassim al Saqr, and Vice President of the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce Mohamed Abdel Fattah el Masri, the Finance Ministry said in a statement on Monday.
Talking about the positive indicators of Egypt’s economy, the minister said that the economy grew at a rate of 6.6% in the fiscal year 2021/2022, which is considered the highest growth rate since 2008.
The budget had a primary surplus of 1.3% last year, its fifth year of such surpluses, he added. The debt-to-GDP ratio would fall to 82.5%

Egypt has adopted proactive policies to be more resilient to external shocks, said the minister.
The minister further noted that Egypt’s Suez Canal revenue hit a record high of dlrs 7 billion in the financial year to June 30.
Egypt is earning about dlrs 500 million monthly from natural gas exports, and aims to raise that figure to dlrs 1 billion in the coming period, added the minister.
Regarding the efforts of the Egyptian-Kuwaiti economic cooperation council, the minister hailed the efforts exerted by the businessmen to promote economic cooperation between the two countries.
Kuwait is Egypt’s third top trade partner, affirmed the minister, adding that there are as many as 105 joint agreements between the two countries.
The volume of Kuwaiti investments in Egypt surpassed dlrs 15 billion, said the minister, adding that the volume of trade exchange between Egypt and Kuwait hit about dlrs 5 billion.
The minister added that the document “State Ownership Policy” and “Golden License” are a strong start to empowering the private sector.
Egypt was one of the first countries in the Middle East and North Africa to issue green bonds worth 750 million dollars in September 2020, he further said.
The revenue of the bonds was directed to financing green projects and achieving sustainable development in the fields of clean transport and renewable energy, he added.

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli said Monday that Egypt is following up developments of the current global crises with the aim to reduce their severe repercussions for the Egyptian economy.
Madbouli was speaking during a meeting with Petroleum Minister Tareq el Molla to discuss efforts to secure oil products to meet needs of the local market, especially in light of the Russian-Ukrainian tension.
The meeting also took up the global energy price hikes, with Molla assuring that the petroleum sector is acting to increase Egypt’s production of high quality oil and reduce imports.
