Cairo: The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that Egypt remains free of measles and rubella for the third consecutive year. Minister of Health and Population Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar received an official letter from Dr. Hanan Balkhy, Regional Director of the WHO for the Eastern Mediterranean Region, stating that Egypt will maintain its status as an "eliminating measles and rubella" country by 2024. This decision was made by the Regional Verification Committee, which first verified Egypt's status in 2022.According to State Information Service Egypt, the Regional Verification Committee's decision came after a comprehensive review of epidemiological data and the national report submitted by Egypt. This review took place during the Committee's meeting in Cairo in December 2025.This announcement is viewed as international recognition of the strength of Egypt's health system, which has been strongly supported by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. It highlights the system's capability to protect current and future generations from serious infectious diseases, reinforcing Egypt's leading position among Eastern Mediterranean countries in eliminating vaccine-preventable diseases.
