Cairo: Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Egypt, Chitose Noguchi, affirmed the program's strong commitment to enhancing cooperation with Egypt in the field of climate change adaptation. She highlighted ongoing preparations to launch a pilot project in the Damietta governorate, which will focus on integrated coastal zone management and disaster risk reduction.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Noguchi revealed that the project is funded by the French fund and coordinated with the Ministry of Environment and other relevant national bodies. The primary aim is to improve the resilience of coastal communities in the northern Nile Delta against climate change impacts, specifically targeting issues such as coastal erosion and sea-level rise.
Noguchi commended Egypt's efforts in climate adaptation and emphasized the need for effective policies, along with targeted technical and financial support for the most vulnerable areas. She mentioned that UNDP has already implemented nature-based solutions along 69 kilometers of coastline and has supported broader coastal protection efforts in the Delta.
Additionally, Noguchi stated that the Damietta project will be the first pilot venture of its kind, with plans to replicate its results in other regions. She reaffirmed UNDP's commitment to continued cooperation with Egypt in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
