Transition to Green Economy Part of Egypt Vision 2030

Cairo: Minister of Public Business Sector Mohamed Shimi announced that the shift toward a green economy and the adoption of sustainable business models represent a strategic priority for his ministry, aligning with Egypt's Vision 2030 and the National Strategy for Climate Change 2050. This statement was made during his participation in the 'Chapter Zero Egypt - The Climate Directors' Forum,' an annual conference focusing on climate governance, under the theme 'Climate Governance in Practice: Ministerial Leadership and Integration with the Private Sector for a Green Economy.'According to State Information Service Egypt, the conference featured prominent figures such as Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda; Engineer Hani Dahi, former Minister of Transport and Chairman of Abu Qir Fertilizers; Dr. Mohamed Shaker, former Minister of Electricity; and Hossam Heiba, CEO of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones. Other attendees included Mark Davis from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Engineer Ahmed El Sewedy, and numerous CEOs and board members from major Egyptian companies and international development agencies.Minister Shimi elaborated that companies under the Ministry of Public Business Sector, spanning industries from mining and chemicals to textiles and real estate, are actively working to reduce carbon emissions and adhere to green transition standards. This aligns with the European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).He further highlighted that the ministry has an integrated plan from 2025 to 2030 to transform its affiliated companies into low-emission entities. Companies like Egyptalum, Egyptian Ferroalloys, and Egyptian Copper Works have already obtained ISO 14064 certification for carbon footprint reduction, while Al-Nasr Fertilizers has established a wastewater treatment and water reuse unit.In the textile sector, production upgrades have been m ade to meet environmental standards as part of a national project for industry development. Additionally, several hotels, including the Nile Ritz-Carlton, Safir Dahab, and Romance Alexandria, have been awarded the Green Star certification for environmental sustainability.The minister underscored the importance of private sector partnerships, citing more than 50 investment opportunities in affiliated companies, with over 45% focused on green manufacturing technologies and renewable energy development. Key projects include green ammonia and hydrogen production lines at Al-Nasr Fertilizers and KIMA, and recycling initiatives at Egyptalum and the Egyptian Carbon Anode Blocks Company.Moreover, Al-Nasr Automotive is advancing the electric vehicle industry, concentrating on localizing electric battery manufacturing and biopharmaceutical production, further solidifying Egypt's commitment to a sustainable future.
