Cairo: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received a phone call from his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, during which Sisi affirmed Egypt's firm condemnation and rejection of Iran's targeting of the Arab Gulf countries, Jordan, and Iraq, stressing that these countries did not support the war against Iran nor participate in it. They instead contributed to de-escalation efforts and supported Iranian-American negotiations aimed at reaching a diplomatic solution to the crisis, Sisi added.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the president expressed Egypt's desire to uphold the principle of good neighborliness and to see these attacks stop immediately, Presidency Spokesman Mohamed el Shennawy said. Sisi voiced Egypt's regret over the current escalation and its deep concern about its negative impact on regional stability and the interests of its peoples, while reviewing Egypt's efforts to halt military operations and return to the negotiation process. In this regard, he emphasized the need for showing flexibility.
For his part, the Iranian president expressed appreciation for Egypt's efforts and for President Sisi's role in seeking to de-escalate tensions. He affirmed Iran's participation in negotiation rounds to reach an agreement on its nuclear program and stressed his country's commitment to brotherly relations and good neighborliness with Arab countries.
The two leaders also discussed ways to end the escalation, with President Sisi affirming Egypt's readiness to make every effort to mediate and promote political and diplomatic solutions, while stressing the necessity of respecting international law, the UN Charter, state sovereignty and territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs.
