Planning Minister and EBRD Director Discuss Support for Egypt’s Economic Stability

Cairo: Minister of Planning and Economic Development Ahmed Rostom met with Mark Davis, Managing Director of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), to discuss the latest developments in the global economy and their impact on Egypt's economy. The meeting aimed to explore ways to support the country's efforts to achieve economic stability and promote sustainable development pathways.According to State Information Service Egypt, Rostom emphasized that addressing the current global challenges requires a comprehensive and proactive vision rather than short-term reactive measures. He highlighted the Egyptian government's focus on enhancing the national economy's readiness to face crises through the development of early warning tools and the implementation of flexible policies. These efforts are intended to support rapid response, ensure market stability, and reinforce the credibility of economic policies.Rostom noted that recent measures have strengthened the resilience of the Egyptian economy, contributing to relative stability despite accelerating global challenges. He credited the flexibility of the Egyptian economy and the coordination among state institutions for their roles in managing shocks efficiently while leveraging international best practices in crisis management.Looking ahead, Rostom explained that the ministry operates within an integrated framework aligned with the state's economic strategy to achieve stable growth rates. The ministry continues to monitor various scenarios to address economic pressures, particularly concerning inflation rates and developments in energy markets.Rostom emphasized the importance of economic diversification and innovation as pillars for improving economic efficiency and achieving sustainable development. He stressed the need for strengthened cooperation between the government and international development partners to support economic balance and sustainable growth.He reiterated the state's commit ment to developing economic policies, monitoring performance indicators, and enhancing the role of the private sector as a key partner in sustainable economic development across various activities.EBRD's regional director Davis acknowledged the challenges facing global economies and noted that achieving ambitious development goals may not be easy amid uncertainty. He stressed the importance of continuing reform agendas with confidence and enhancing adaptability to changing conditions.Davis highlighted the need for development efforts to be part of a comprehensive institutional development process aligned with national strategies. He also pointed out the necessity to reassess mechanisms for allocating development financing to balance support for development priorities with strengthening the role of the private sector and expanding public-private partnership models for resource efficiency and sustainable economic growth.
