Ottawa: Dr Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and acting Minister of Environment, met with Wopke Hoekstra, the European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth, and Ole Thonke, the Danish Climate Ambassador and State Secretary at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Development. The discussions centered on significant environmental issues and took place during the Ninth Ministerial Meeting on Climate Action in Canada, which included ministers from the EU, China, Canada, and several developing countries.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Dr Manal Awad articulated Egypt’s priorities for the upcoming 30th Conference of the Parties on climate change, emphasizing the full implementation of the Paris Agreement. She highlighted the necessity of achieving tangible results in finance, technology transfer, and capacity-building. Dr Awad also underscored the importance of operationalizing the global adaptation goal and securing adequate climate finance, particularly for nations like
Egypt and other African countries most threatened by climate change.
Dr Awad stressed the linkage between enabling countries to implement their nationally determined contributions and the provision of technical support, capacity-building, and financing. She called for a work programme that supports a just transition and emphasized the importance of finance, technology, and capacity. Dr Awad also highlighted the activation of Egypt’s first regulated voluntary carbon market in August 2024, operating in cooperation with the Egyptian Carbon Exchange (EGCX) and under the supervision of the Financial Regulatory Authority.
