FM Warns of Danger of Expansion of Military Operations in Region

Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty received a phone call on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, from Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel. During the call, the two ministers discussed the serious regional developments in the area and ways to reduce escalation and promote de-escalation.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the Egyptian minister warned of the dangers of the expansion of military operations in the region. Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Tamim Khallaf said Abdelatty briefed his Portuguese counterpart on Egypt's stand regarding the regional developments amid the dangerous military escalation in the region. He further stressed the need for regional and international efforts to work together to reduce escalation and prioritize diplomatic tracks and political solutions and emphasized the importance of resorting to dialogue and diplomacy to contain the situation, warning of the risks of the widening scope of military operations, which could place the security and stability of the entire region under serious challenges.

Meantime, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's condemnation of any targeting of the sovereignty and security of sisterly and friendly Arab states. The two ministers agreed on the importance of prioritizing the diplomatic path as the only way to contain the current tensions while preserving regional peace and security.

For his part, Portugal's foreign minister praised Egypt's efforts to contain the current regional escalation and expressed appreciation for Egypt's efforts in evacuating Portuguese nationals stranded in the region through Egyptian territory. The two ministers agreed on the need to continue coordination and consultations in the coming period and to work toward de-escalation in the region, taking into account the close relations between the two friendly countries.
