Moscow: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty expressed Cairo’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Malawi’s new government during a meeting with Malawi’s Foreign Minister George Chaponda. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Russian-African ministerial conference, focusing on bolstering bilateral relations and addressing shared interests.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty congratulated Chaponda on assuming office in October 2025 and emphasized the importance of initiating political consultations. These discussions aim to facilitate the first meeting of the joint high committee, reflecting Egypt’s commitment to supporting Malawi through capacity-building programs and encouraging Egyptian private sector engagement in Malawi.
The Egyptian foreign minister highlighted Egypt’s expertise in renewable energy and infrastructure, proposing a delegation visit to explore opportunities in Malawi, particularly in infrastructure and hydropower projects. Abdelatty welcomed Malawi’s interest in Egyptian expertise in modern irrigation, agriculture, and fertilizers.
Cairo also aims to enhance the availability of Egyptian pharmaceutical and health products in Malawi and promote medical tourism. Abdelatty underscored the significance of cooperation in mining, in light of Malawi’s open sector to foreign investment, and called for stronger economic ties, especially in fertilizers, agriculture, and irrigation.
Discussing trade, Abdelatty suggested exploring increased trade volumes and the potential exchange of Egyptian fertilizers for Malawian goods. He emphasized the importance of establishing a direct air link between Cairo and Lilongwe and the involvement of Egyptian companies in rehabilitating Kamuzu International Airport.
Abdelatty noted the success of joint military committee meetings and the role of the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development in building Malawian capacities. On regional cooperation, he stressed the need for coordination on African issues, particularly the institutional reform of the African Union, advocating for a methodical and inclusive approach.
The ministers exchanged views on promoting stability, peace, and security across Africa, reinforcing their commitment to collaborative efforts in the region.
