Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty has stepped up intensive diplomatic contacts as part of ongoing efforts to de-escalate mounting military tensions across the region.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the Foreign Minister held a series of high-level discussions on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, with Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohamed Ishaq Dar, US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the region Jean Arnault.
The talks focused on assessing rapidly evolving developments and ongoing efforts to reach understandings between the US and Iran aimed at calming tensions, amid what officials described as a critical and highly sensitive phase for the region.
Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's intensive diplomatic efforts to contain the situation, stressing the urgent need for wisdom and restraint to defuse the crisis and avert a potentially catastrophic scenario that would impact all parties.
He underscored the importance of prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy to reach a consensual solution that ensures de-escalation and prevents broader regional repercussions.
The discussions also addressed severe implications of the conflict on freedom of navigation, global supply chains, food security, and international trade, in addition to energy security concerns amid rising oil and energy prices.
Participants emphasized the need to intensify efforts to end the conflict, contain its far-reaching consequences and prevent further instability and insecurity in the region.
