Cairo: Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts to implement Waste Management Regulation Law 202 of 2020 by developing measures that enhance supervision over electronic and electrical waste, both technically and procedurally.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Yasser Abdullah, CEO of the Waste Management Regulatory Authority (WMRA), convened with multiple e-waste recycling companies at the ministry's headquarters in the New Capital. The agenda focused on strategies for regulating the circulation of electronic waste.
Abdullah outlined initiatives to monitor e-waste and manage public and private auctions. The ministry's goal is to ensure that only certified companies can participate in bidding, based on approved environmental criteria, to facilitate a more efficient recycling process.
The meeting also provided a platform for addressing and overcoming current operational challenges faced by specialized recycling firms.
The WMRA is solely responsible for licensing e-waste treatment, ensuring that materials are processed in accredited facilities. This regulatory framework aims to sever the supply chain to the informal sector, thereby protecting environmental standards and public health from hazardous waste components.
